White Mantel

Description

When I showed this project to friends I got all sorts of questions so I'll go ahead and give the long winded explanation in case anyone is interested.

I'll start at the bottom. The mantel has been raised about 2 inches with a cardboard stage set on top. This allows for the strand of led lights and cord to be hidden inside. Three lights were inserted into each hole under the houses. On top of the stage I attached shaped styrofoam to simulate snow banks/hills. Over this went the faux snow fabric. Second piece of fabric wrapped over a sheet of cardboard went into the inset area above the mantel. Fabric is very thin and everything under it had to be covered in white paper or painted white.

The houses are cut out of presentation board.(something like mat board) The 4 sides and roof were then glued together and given a coat of white paint to color the exposed edges. Translucent paper (like tracing paper) is used to cover the windows to allow light out but hide the bulbs. The houses could be made with any paper but the lighter stuff (and balsa wood) will glow. Nice look but not what I was looking for.

The trees are made from standard printer paper. They are a series of stacked cones with spacers to give more dimension. I found card stock to heavy especially on the smaller trees. Inspired by a picture I saw somewhere on the net.

The stars are made from card stock. (Don't recall the tutorial I used but if you look up 3d stars you'll find instructions on how to make them). I hot glued a pin onto the back so they would stay stuck to the faux snow fabric.

The snowflakes were cut out of standard printer paper. I didn't cut them individually. No pins for these. They stick to the fabric easily. To make them I glued several sheets of paper together, making sure not to glue where a snowflake was, and then cut them out. Usually 4-5 sheets depending on size and complexity. This makes it easier to deal with and way faster. Did this when cutting out the stars as well.

The paper balls were made of card stock. Found the instructions HERE with a great video. Without the video I'm not sure I could have figured it out. These were then strung from the ceiling on thread. I applied hot glue beads at pre-marked locations, added after they were strung, to have them sit at the correct height.
